Meet the client – Family Business
Elaine and Graham were first introduced to Greystone Senior Consultant, Claire Finch, by their Accountants in 2011. They were at a time in their lives when they needed financial advice concerning pensions, investments and insurance.
Graham had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer so they decided that they needed to get their financial affairs in order. An added complexity was the ownership of a family business.
The family business is an industrial roof glazing company established 26 years ago, which was owned and led by Graham. His two daughters Vicky and Sarah also worked in the firm.
“After some great advice from Claire” explains Elaine, “various trusts were set up through our solicitors to deal with any pension and insurance funds should anything happen to Graham”.
Tragically in 2013, and just two weeks before their daughter Sarah gave birth to her first child, Graham died of a heart attack while playing five a side football. Elaine reflects back to when it happened.
“It was a dreadful shock and totally unexpected. It was an incredibly tough time not only for us as a family, but also the business; we were operating on auto pilot.
Claire was brilliant she just took away all the financial stress by dealing with everything to do with the financial side of things”.
Elaine’s daughters became joint managing directors – Sarah in charge of operations and Vicky taking charge of sales. Sarah’s husband Tom is the installation manager, so it remained very much a family business.
“Having Claire deal with financial side meant we had one less thing to think about,” continues Elaine “especially as Sarah’s son had now arrived and life was very busy”.
“It was a good job Sarah and I spent so much time with Dad” Vicky adds. “He passed on his passion and high standards for the business to us. I love my role it takes me all over the country promoting and selling our roofing systems across commercial and educational sectors.”
“Vicky and I are a great partnership” interjects Sarah. “Vicky is the passion behind our sales and exactly like Dad in terms of driving the sales and the business focus and my role ensures that operationally the business runs smoothly and efficiently.
We are all extremely proud of the legacy our Dad has left the family and for the future generations. Vicky now has a son herself so we look to the future: Graham would be thrilled that we have just achieved a record year for sales and we are continually looking forward to the future working to improve our current products and develop new ones.”
Elaine continues: “The way Greystone operates is excellent. Yes we pay an annual fee, but you know where you are, you are not charged by the minute as with many professional services.
If you need help this means you are not afraid to pick up the phone – it is very reassuring to know that Claire is always there for support and advice.”
“Its always a pleasure to visit Elaine” adds Claire. “She is more of a friend now than a client.”
